The precariousness of top athletes - Genezys

We live for sports, but most of the time, sport doesn't make us live.

An expensive dream

High-level sport makes you dream, but behind the podiums and medals, the economic reality of athletes is often precarious. Contrary to popular belief, the majority of top athletes are not rolling in gold.

The numbers are impressive: 48% of top athletes earn less than 1,000 euros per month, and only 9% earn more than 3,000 euros. In 2015, nearly one athlete out of two earned less than 500 euros per month. This financial precariousness affects many sports, especially the less publicized ones, but also sportswomen, who have more difficulty attracting sponsors.

Exorbitant seasonal costs 💸

Unlike team sports, where clubs often cover part of the costs, individual disciplines require a colossal personal investment. A young skier at the start of their career (15-16) must spend over $10,000 per year on club, travel, and equipment expenses. In biathlon, a rifle costs between 3,000 and 5,000 euros. These expenses are often borne by families in the absence of adequate institutional support or sponsorship.

🏃 Top athlete Killian Koob describes a real obstacle course:
“It's a daily struggle. Between training costs, travel to competitions and the purchase of equipment, the costs add up quickly. Clubs can't cover everything. Without solid financial support, it is difficult to progress and compete at the highest level.” (Source: Le 24 Heures)

⛷️ Maya Cloetens, Belgian biathlete and Genezys athlete:
“Today, I am 21 years old, I am a top athlete and I cannot afford an apartment. I am still living with my parents. I really like them, but I would like to be more independent. I am not asking for a house, a simple studio with a full fridge is enough for me. I want to make a living from my sport, because it's my job. But I am having trouble paying my bills, so how do I earn a small salary to (over) live?”

Unlike the United States or Australia, where athletes benefit from grants and public funding, French athletes often have to find alternative solutions to finance their careers.

Sponsorship: An opportunity for a few

Sports marketing works according to a well-known rule: 10% of athletes represent 90% of sponsorships. Only stars attract individual sponsors. In disciplines that receive little media coverage, it is not enough to be efficient, it is also necessary to build an image and a community to attract partnerships.

Genezys: a model that is changing the game 📣

Chez Genezys, we decided to put an end to this injustice and offer an innovative economic model to support athletes.

Genezys is the bridge between athletes and their fans. With our Fancards, we enable fans to support their favorite athletes financially. Most of the proceeds from the sale of Fancards are donated to athletes and clubs, which ensures them a direct income.

At Genezys, we are committed to helping athletes from all walks of life, whether they play high-profile sports or lesser-known disciplines such as ski mountaineering, judo, petanque, petanque, trail running, or water skiing. Men and women, young talents or confirmed athletes, all have their place on Genezys.

We offer them the opportunity to earn money through their commitment to their fans. In return, they can thank their most committed supporters through exclusive challenges, unique gifts, special encounters and invitations to exceptional events.

It's a win-win model, where each fan becomes an actor in the career of the athlete they support. 🏆
In a world where only the most media professionals have access to financial resources, Genezys offers all athletes the opportunity to live their passion to the fullest.

✨ Because beyond podiums and trophies, it is time for champions to be able to make a dignified living from their talent. ✨
